WOODSMAN MEETS URBAN RENEGADE IN THIS LINE OF WOODEN WEARABLES FROM UPCYCLED REDWOOD
Founded by brothers Chris and David Steinrueck, Wood Thumb creates one-of-a-kind statement pieces like men’s wood ties, bowties, and other scratch-n-think accessories– all out of reclaimed redwood from the Bay Area.
“We saw such an awe inspiring resource being discarded and resolved to do something to change that,” say the brothers. “We take wood that might end up in incinerators or landfills and give it a new lease on life.”
Each piece of reclaimed redwood is a little part of history: the story spelled out in tree rings and nail holes, in paint and termite tracks.
It might have been a barn, a house, or siding from a sawmill, in some cases for a century or more before it became your favorite tie or clutch.
The San Francisco-based startup receives the redwood from Recology, a company that picks up recyclables and waste in San Francisco. They then take the beams of all shapes and sizes, and square, rip, and shape them into their new wearable forms. Wood Thumb finishes them with natural linseed oil to let the unique grain of each piece shine through.
What’s it like to wear one of their pieces? “Every time I wear a tie out people notice it: they want to know more about it, touch it, feel it, even try it on. It’s a lot of fun to wear”.
